SATURDAY FAN FICTION REPORT - 9/13/97
[Previous report was for 9/12/97]
An all alt. report tonight with two news ones and two updates.
THE BANSHEE'S WAIL by Nene Adams
After XENA BY GASLIGHT (review at http://lunacyreviews.com/
lunacy73097.htm) and THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE (review at http://xenite.
simplenet.com/lunacy/lunacy83197.php), this third story in the series once again brings back one of the most popular and best-drawn incarnations of Xena and Gabrielle to be found in uber fan fiction, the ever-adventurous private investigator Lady Evangeline "Lina" St. Claire and her beloved partner Rhiannon Moore. Set in the late 19th century right after the events in Nene's previous tales, this new offering has Lina and Rhiannon heading for Scotland where they are to attend the reading of Rhiannon's late Great-Aunt Margaret's will. The affair seems simple enough until the two hear a strange tale about ghosts and murder which Lina soon begins to suspect may be connected to an even darker truth. This story is an absolutely DELIGHTFUL marriage between XWP alt. fiction and those great detective stories of old. Nene just keeps outdoing herself with each new story in this series. Her Lina and Rhiannon are two of the most colorful, clever and richly drawn characters I've seen in fiction ANYWHERE. As their relationship grows and deepens through the series it becomes even more enchanting! Nene notes at the end of this tale that if we want to see more, we are to write her. Well folks - I'm finishing this and starting my e-mail message right away because I want to see PLENTY more of Lina, Rhiannon and their extremely talented creator. This story carries my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!!
SAVIORS by Georgia
A thoughtful little tale that has Xena and Gabrielle saving a stranger from a hanging. A stranger who in turn will save them. Different and nicely written.
MIRTH IN HEAVEN by D. Joan Leib
The concluding chapters 9-10 of this story are now available. This is a WILD story, that has Gabrielle suddenly waking up one morning a "different" person and feeling immediately terrified that a wish from her heart is responsible for the sudden "change". Determined to help the bard, Xena decides to visit an oracle suspecting that the gods are at work but unaware of the unlikely alliance that has formed between immortals as two of the Olympians struggle to keep them safe from an enemy vent on destroying the warrior and her afflicted companion. In these final installments Gabrielle learns that she can just be...herself ;-) Funny, sweet, and VERY romantic! DO NOT MISS!
THE PELOPONNESIAN WAR - BOOK III: THE MYTILENE DEBATE by Baermer
Parts 47-49 in the series are now available (NOTE: Baermer has renumbered the various parts to the series) With the siege of Poteidaia now over Xena and Gabrielle face a new challenge - to try to locate a missing Ephiny last seen weeks before when she left the Amazon nation escorting a group of young Amazons to Sappho's school just outside the city of Mytilene. With news that the city is in revolt, the warrior and bard embark on a possible rescue mission with Solari and Epinon. It is a journey that will once again test them physically and emotionally as they struggle with the historic events unfolding around them and with serious issues still unresolved in their relationship. In these latest sections, intrigue and mistrust surround the members of Ephiny's rescue party. From the keyboard of one of our most accomplished bards, this entire series has become a MUST READ in XWP fan fiction. Baermer's writing is often so beautiful that it verges on the poetic. Her characterizations are solid, with intriguing plots that are well planned and meticulously executed. Note that this entire series is available in both subtext-explicit and subtext-lite versions. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
For those of you reading this post who are not familiar with the term alternative (alt.), it refers to ADULT stories that add a romantic element to the relationship between Xena and Gabby, depicting them as more than just friends.
